How can I add a "watermark" to a picture I will display online?

Question

"Watermark" in quotation because I only want it to show when I upload the image to online forums so that my images will not be distributed without my consent. Is this possible? Thanks

I am just getting into the on line art realm too. What I have done so far is purchase on line watermarking soft wear. (I got watermarker.com) It works OK.

I think I'll stop putting watermarks on at all though, here's why:

-the resolution is to poor to reproduce with any quality
-I own the copyright the second I paint the picture.
-I don't ever make prints of my work so it would be a fake if one showed up....(oooh the drama!!)
-I have a sense that images could be coppied any way, I mean if other artists started looking and simulating my or your work for example...watermarks won't help.
-potential buyers can see the image clearly without it....

Creating a semi-transparent layer using an image editing program is the best option. When I display images, I'll place the watermark usually centered to save from the watermark being cropped out.

If you have a layer based image eding program (such as Photoshop, Gimp, JASC, Photo Deluxe (which is free), etc.), just create a new layer and type your name across it or studio name.

Set the new layer transparency to like 50% then flatten the image. Make sure the new text is large enough to show off your name, but still allows for the image to be presentable.

I call it the "google theory"

Google was completely free, no revenue for years. They now own 85% of the market by word of mouth. Another example is youtube.

Get your work out there as much as possible. Let people download it and use it as desktop wallpaper...whatever.

You can put a transparent text image on top of the art in a program like Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop.

How about using transparent type in 72 point with you name across the picture makes it impossible to crop or edit out...........
