Face ... I'm assuming you are taking a whey-based protein. Usually when people get gas from whey protein mixes it's due to the lactose in the whey. This is the same thing that makes people get gas when they drink milk.

Occasionally, some individuals will have problems digesting the protein itself, regardless of the lactose. This can cause bloating, gas and stomach upset as well.

I would try switching brands or formulas to see if you can find one that doesn't give you gas. I had this problem when I started using whey protein and eventually found that Optimum Nutrition (ON) 100% Whey worked well for me. They remove most of the lactose and add some digestive enzymes. I've never had a digestion problem since. Isopure Whey Isolate is also lactose free and much easier to digest. GNC sells both. They put the ON 100% whey on sale fairly frequently. Or you can find them online.

Look for powders that list lactase in their ingredients. Also, whey isolates are usually lactose free, while whey concentrates tend to have higher lactose levels because of how they are processed.

Finally, you might try taking a couple tablets of papaya enzyme with your shakes, which can aid with protein digestion. You can find them at most health food stores.

i say the aftermath is different with people.

I was drinking whey protein for a while.....and I don't think I was more gassy than usual.

....if anything its probably because of the ingrediants.

I'm pretty sure its nothing to be cautious of...you'll be fine.

ps--> Peanut Butter is good for protein too!

The body has problems breaking certain things down, especially in chemically altered proteins.

some people don't like whey. If it gives you gas, stop it. I found 1 company's product (they went under sadly) that left me feeling great. It worked wonders. Then they went under.

I think it's the quantity. Sometimes if I get a little too much I have that side effect. Most of time time, it's not a problem.
