I can hear that they are speaking to me. But I can't make out what they are saying. It's not that I hear what they are saying and I don't understand but I can't make out their syllables at all. I can't catch their words. It's getting worse. All my life sometimes maybe their accent is strange and you just can't make out what they are saying but now this is happening more often and with classmates with 'normal' british accents that I am used to.

Why is this happening? Is there something wrong with me?

You might be loosing your hearing. I had a deaf teacher who could hear noices but couldnt make out what was being said. Or even if it was a male or female voice. Go to a doctor and tell her/him about your problem.

Haven't you ever had your hearing checked? You have the same thing that I have had forever, high frequency hearing loss. That's why you can't understand the words. Most syllables sound too much alike, like B and C and D and T and Z for instance. I know EXACTLY how you feel. It's very FRUSTRATING!!! And there isn't much that can be done about it. Most hearing aids aren't sensitive enough to just amplify the high frequency sounds and the one that are are VERY expensive.

Go to the Dr. if you're that worried about Sherlock!! You can only be diagnosed by a professional anyways...we can't help you even if there is something wrong!

you probably need to see a specalist if your being serious. Ive heard weird stories of one woman waking up having a completely new accent, so i doubt its weird to be having problems hearing them, its probably something with your brain....doc reccomended.

Go ahead and try to explain again. Just not in as much depth. Add detail. Go ahead.

I would see a doctor if I were you. Anyway, take it easy, probably it's nothing too serious.
