It's not important for people to get them out. sometimes it is necessary because they can be painful and crowd your other teeth. and you back teeth are more prone to have bacteria which can lead to strep throat and other illnesses because people tend to over look them when their brushing.

Why remove a wisdom tooth?

http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/wizdk.jpg shows one reason. This is what can happen by the time you are 40 or 50 if you leave a wisdom tooth in place when it is impacted. The red arrows on the x-ray show the grey area that has decayed due to the wisdom tooth being present under the gum. The tooth shown is the exact same tooth shown in the x-ray, but turned so you can see the cavity. Food and bacteria can get down there and you can't clean it out. Eventually, it makes a cavity in the tooth next to the wisdom tooth and makes it so you have to have BOTH teeth removed.

Some people naturally have enough room in there mouths to accommodate for all their teeth including wisdom but most people do not. For those of us who do not have enough room for our wisdom teeth, if not removed, our wisdom will slowly push our existing teeth out of way. This will cause our front teeth to become very misaligned and out of place. Have you ever seen a bum with really messed up teeth. Well, two things are happening there. For one, their teeth have probably not been taken care of properly and secondly, they have not had their wisdom teeth removed. So if you don't want to have a mouth full of messed up looking teeth, then get your wisdom teeth removed when and if your dentist tells you to.

maybe nothing...not everyone has to get them out. BUT...they often cause a lot of problems, especially as you get older. They're harder to keep clean and are particularly prone to decay and gum disease. They can also take the molars in front of them down with them, so to speak. Most people don't have enough room for them, so they can remain partially or fully impacted, and make the above problem much worse. There is some risk of infection around the wisdom teeth also, which can become life-threatening in extreme situations, but these cases are somewhat rare. Basically, most people need to get them out to prevent a bigger problem later in life. It is a lot easier to heal when you are young.

Well it is not conclusive, but it may lead to later crowding of your lower front teeth. It can also lead to infection in the area of the impacted wisdom teeth or it can put pressure on the adjacent molar and cause root resorption and or caries on the tooth it is pressing up against. It is best to have it xrayed every now and then to see if it is not causing harm. Or you can have them removed.

Ha ha like the last answer. They can make your teeth crooked and cost you heaps in dental bills. But if you are like me and dont mind slightly crooked teeth then dont get them out!! Unless they are causing you grief and the dentist advises it. I have all four of mine and they are all up so I most likely have four more teeth than you! It also depends on the space in your jaw and the size and spacing of your other teeth. Oh by the way I'm 36 and not had one tooth ache ever. I have done modeling so no they are not that bad and I am not ugly even though I have slight butterfly front teeth.

Its not necessarily 'important' to get them out if you don't need to. They're better off right where they are. But, often times, for a lot of people, there just isn't enough room for them, and they crowd the other teeth, cause some pain while they cut the gums coming in, pressure on the jaw bone... any number of complications. But, if you're among the lucky ones and don't need to have them removed for relife of discomfort ... or downright pain! ... them leave them where they are.
But, contrary to popular belief, they won't make you smarter.

Because they keep moving until they are touching the gum. Then you will chew something there and hurt the gum. The gum will swell up and then it's easier to hurt it again. This progresses until you are in constant pain. Believe me it doesn't feel good. If you have a wisdom tooth with no opposing tooth for it to bite against, you will have it removed. You have no choice. If you do have a top and a bottom wisdom tooth, then you keep them.

The main reasons for extracting wisdom teeth are, it can be very painful when they cut through. Another is over-crowding. There really is no room for them.
There isn't a reason to keep them, but it's also not harmful.

My dentist is saying that I should get out my wisdom teeth soon. If the wisdom teeth's roots grow even deeper, it will become very painful, and much harder for the dentist to take them out. It is better to take the teeth out before they grow deep and are difficult to take out.
