Ten years of working with different therapists has not helped. Antidepressants (luvox paxil lexapro) also not helped. Xanax with alcohol gives some temporary relief. Also spent $500.00 on tapes from Lucinda Bassett. Are there any institutions out there with any success stories?

There is no "cure" per se, but you can learn to live with it. To work with your symptoms and not against.
I have had many different types of therapy, multiple medication changes and combinations, even two hospitalizations in the child psychiatric unit. It has taken a lot of time, plus missing a year of high school making me behind, but finally, I am at a point where all is working well.
You will get there. You have to just keep hope, have faith in everyone and everything. Try all the different treatment options, do not give up. And be very, very open. Especially with yourself. You'll have to find the right combination of meds and theapy for you. Everyone is different. What I would suggest is getting a good psychologist and getting official testing for a concrete diagnosis. Then, find a good psychiatrist to help with meds. Both can help with therapy.

You've gotten many good answers here. I've worked with therapists about as long as you have. I believe the right mix of meds is critically important. I was on Paxil too, for years, and it worked moderately well. To that I added a lot of alcohol which worked well--until it didn't. I've learned a lot in AA about getting out of yourself and trying to be of service to others. As others have said, "your mind can be like a bad neighborhood-- you don't want to go in there alone." Being busy-- not isolating!- and feeling that your work has merit is essential. As for the med mix I was speaking of, I'm currently taking Lexapro, Klonopin and Welbutrin. After many years I've found this combo is working pretty well for me. And yes, prayer and meditation, and exercise. If you don't have a dog, get a shelter dog and walk your butts off-- honestly, sounds stupid but it really helps. Good luck, you have many empathetic friends here.

There is no cure for anxiety and depression. These are things that everyone experiences and we all have different ways of dealing with these. Get plenty of rest at night, approximately 8 hours each night. When you wake up take a sheet of paper and a pen. Write down all the things that you need to do that day and a few things you enjoy doing. I do this regularly. It feels good when you look at that sheet at the end of a day and notice that you have completed everything that you planned. You may be a bit tired, but you'll sleep happy. Don't behave like a victim. It does no good. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Are you going to waste your life lamenting your weaknesses? Wouldn't you rather enjoy and further develop your strengths? If you are a man I recommend the book, "MAN OF STEEL AND VELVET" by Aubrey Andelin. For women I recommend "FASCINATING WOMANHOOD" by Helen Andelin. The changes that you need to make are mostly in your way of thinking. Don't behave as if there is no hope. Study yourself. If you have had traumatic experiences learn from them. If you have deep emotional scars I would recommend that you speak to a man of God. Don't waste your money on shrinks. "BE NOT OVERCOME OF EVIL, BUT OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD."

Hello Curious- Do not give up!.....I also have depression and anxiety. I do not know if there is a cure for it but I do know there is a lot of stuff to diminish the symptoms. You have to find the right therapist and the right med. It took me a long time to find them, but finallly did it!. It is important that you talk to your New doctor to find the root of the problem. Also ask him about Cymbalta (anti-depressant). Also do many activities such as exercise, yoga, acupuncture!...Scientific research says that depression and anxiety are caused by an imbalance in brain neurotrasmiters. The spiritual explanation is that one has a spirit attached that causes these feelings of worthlessness. And acupuncture treats this. Remember do not give up! Argentox2@yahoo.com

I feel your pain. I have been living with chronic anxiety and depression for about 16 years now. I have tried everything. Meds, therapy, diet, exercise, etc. It can be hell at times. Xanax and staying as active as possible helps me more than anything. As for a cure.... there is none.

I know a couple of good websites and I am a member of a great online support group (live chat) for people with anxiety. Feel free to email me through here if you would like the info I just mentioned, or if you would just like to chat with someone who is experiencing the same thing and understands what you are going through. I will give you my email address and yahoo messenger ID if you'd like.

Good luck to you.

You have spent 10 years working with differetn therapists.......why
did you leave them? Ask yourself that question. Alcohol solves nothing. It also does not give you temporary relief it merely masks your real problems. Your help must start within and I think
you are on that road right now because asking for help is the
first step to being well. Anxiety and depression? Sometimes I
very much dislike "labels" they seem to put a tag on you. There
isn't a tag on you. Try Yoga, honestly I used to laugh at my daughter and she is further along with this than I'll ever be because she helped herself.
Write a list of questions for your next therapist and don't hire them if you don't feel comfortable. There is one out there and
when you are ready to accept their help you will be free of these labels. Bless you and keep trying, if only for yourself.

well i would not say to go to an institution to get any kind of help, cause most of them just want to mediate you, and you just walk around like a zombie. I know that some depressions can be treated with mediation and therapy and be cured in as less of a time as 6 months. Now for the anxiety attacks, you can learn to let them pass to float over you, and in time they will not bother you anymore. you may have a few but not bad, and they will just be like the ones that everyone else have, you also need to learn to control stress in your life, cause that is what is causeing your anxiety.
but yes you can get over both of them .

Hi, My mum, sister, daughter, husband and myself all suffer with varying degrees of depression/anxiety. Find a good Doctor. You need to find one who specialises in this area. There are hundreds of different medications on the market. Not everyone is going to be right for you. Keep trying, and please steer clear of the Xanax and alcohol. This is how people suffering with these types of mental illness accidentally kill themselves. You also need to get to the bottom of your anxiety/depression. Behavior modification therapy is also helpful. Good luck
