Only female cats can be calico, because the genes for color are carried on the X chromosome. In order for a male to be calico, he'd have to have a disorder where he inherited three sex chromosomes (XXY).

I've never heard of a color being linked exclusively to males.

Calico and tortiseshell cats are always female cats. They can never be male cats.
As far as orange tabby cats go, most of them are male, but they can be females, even if it is a rarity. I had a neighbor who had a female orange tabby. I don't think there are any colors that are only male, and I've had a lot of cats in my life.

I have heard the same thing about a certain cat being a color the other is not.
I have never seen a male calico. My life is not over yet. Maybe one day....
I'll scope out the links.
Dontcha just despise ppl who answer before even reading the end of the question?!

Calico cats are usually always female...its very very rare to find a male calico. I have 3 female calicos ;)

Your friend is confused. There is no color that is exclusive to either male or female cats.

A male Tortoise Shell or Calico cat is rare though, and sterile, because they have an extra sex chromosome. They are XXY.

Both calico and tortoiseshell are very rare in males. Haven't heard a male coloration that's rare in females.

Calico is all female cats and no male cats. I don't know about a color that is all male and not female.

I'm not sure if there's any color rare for females...but males are rarely or never calico. It has to do with genetics. They can be tortoise shell though...that's just orange and black...Calico is three colors...orange, black, and white.

I've heard that just orange tabby females are rare, that orange females have white as well and not just shades of orange. My kitty is an orange tabby female. Everyone assumes she's a he, until they hear her beautiful voice. :-)
