All depends on your general pain tolerance, to describe it. Imagine you have a scratch on your arm, drag a needle/pin lightly through it a few times. Sometimes if the art is concentrated in one area the pain after a while can feel heavy and raw, and burny. Some people say the worse part is the outline and heavy blacks like tribals, whilst shading and colour feel different.
It also depends on the location, My lower back I have a tribal just above my tail bone, that was my worst to date, the one 5" above that another black outline piece isnt as big and was sore but fine. My shoulder was a piece of cake, and so was the top of my foot.
My partners got tattoos on his forearms and he struggled with those and took a few breaks. Whilst his Mom sat for 2 hours and had the top of her arm done with quite a detailed piece, her quote was Waxing was worse!
As you can see its variable, if you find it tough, ask for a break. Just remember to eat and drink before you get your tatt done, it does help.

For me, of all my tattoos, the most painful places have been over very fleshy areas...the parts directly over bone are a relief to the fleshy inking pain! On my backpiece, (I haven't measured it yet, but it's a good size), I could fall asleep while he's inking the spine! The more painful/sensitive parts of that piece happen as he moves outward from the spine...toward ribs and sensitive muscles. But thats me...I have a high pain tolerance and muscle spasms in my back!
The most painful tattoo I've got is the Japanese Cherry Blossoms on my waistband. Not quite sure how to explain where they are without giving *T*M*I* but let's just say it's where pubic hair should be! LOL
If you pick a design that has great meaning for you, it will be worth any pain or discomfort it causes...and you will most likely find yourself wanting another one at some point. Very few people stop at one!
Good luck to you!

It doesn't really hurt that bad.. it hurts a little bit because they are tearing through skin but I have a big tattoo on my lower back and the only part that really hurt was the sides.. and on the lowest part of the tattoo but the coloring does not hurt at all. Good luck!

Honestly, I know this sounds vague but it's really going to depend on your pain tolerance and where you get it on your body. Everyone is different. I have heard of many instances where a person faints or cries through their tattoo. I went in expecting the worst but when it was actually happening, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Don't get me wrong, it did hurt...but it wasn't the agonizing pain that I was expecting. It's bearable....it feels kind of like bee stings....repeatedly. Not the most pleasant experience but not the worst either.

Its just bearable. The first few minutes are the worst. Just dont go getting any words or ugly skulls. If you have a look at tatoos before you get one then picture your back when your 80 years old an pick something that wont look to bad. That way you wont regret it. It also depends on where you get one. If you get someone to prick your back with a needle then thats how it will feel over and over and over and over and over again.

Remember when you were a kid and your freinds gave you an "indian burn" they'd take your arm and use their hands to twist your skin opposite directions.
That's about what a tattoo feels like. In the end it's about your personal tolerance. When the go across the top of a bone it's a little worse.
If you can't handle the pain I listed earlier, you probably won't think your tatoo is worth it.

this question's almost impossible to answer, but i'll help if i can.
1. placement depends on pain....where on your back???
2. size depends as well
im guessing your lower back/side areas and around your spinal region would hurt worse than a simple shoulder blade. but the back is not the most sensitive area in the body to get tattooed, yes, there are more painful places.

LOL, it's not going to be excruciating pain, I promise. I have a 6"X8" butterfly on my back right over my spine. Yes, it does hurt a little bit, especially if you get it over bone, but it's not THAT bad! Just get it on a well-padded area. My husband got one and he hates pain. ;-)
Also, I wanted to add that it does NOT feel like someone sticks you with a needle over and over again, it feels more like someone scratching or scraping your skin. If you're really sick, LOL, take a sewing needle, place it just against your skin without breaking it and drag it down your skin. That's kind of what it feels like. In addition, a lot of places will not tattoo you if you've been drinking since alcohol thins the blood. Granted, you will not bleed to death, but it gets messy I guess, LOL.

Its more annoying while you are getting it done. Then after you feel like you have a sunburn. Just depends on how much you can handle. Don't get it done over a bony area, will hurt more.
