The process could take a few hours. Your hair is a natural black and you tried to dye it lighter? Okay, this is the process, They will strip the color from your hair (the pigment). That takes about an hour. Then they have to condition and get ready for the coloring process. Because your hair is dark that could take atleast another hour and a half. Then there is conditioning and styling hair.

okay I not bragging or any thing but I know a ton more of hair dyeing than all the other people. Trust me i dye my hair every month so I know what I'm talking about. Okay if you want to go lighter go to the salon don't buy the cheap stuff at the store they don't work. Go to a salon and it is a little pricey but its great, their going to bleach it and it took them 4 and a half hours to bleach my hair but i have long hair. When the bleach it ask them for a really good shampoo that will not damage your hair and take out the good minerals. It will make your great looking hair look even healther.
Good Luck

Don't bother with the salon their ten times more expensive then a home kit. Just bleach it, and then dye it yourself. Or purchase a kit thats 2 shades lighter than what you want and use that brown right on top of your color. Perhaps just bleach it but leave the color on for only half the time that just might leave you with the brown you desire. Why dye your beautiful Black hair anyway.

sorry, the only way to lift artificial hair color is with bleach and then after it is lifted to the desired pigment lightness a color may be placed over this to tone it
the lightening process is the tricky part in terms of timing as it depends on level of lightness you wish to achieve and the depth of artifical pigment that is present( whether it will lift easily or not, how thick or coarse the hair is). it also depends on the strength of developer they use with the bleach or stripper. I personally prefer to do this process slowly with lowest volume of developer possible (but strong enough to achieve the goal). if it is done slowly then the cuticle of the hair doesn't swell too quickly causing the least amount of damage and this enables the colorist to control the process better for more even result.
having said that, the tinting or toning process can take from 10- 30 minutes to process.after all the lightening is complete and removed
for any corrective color allow several hours and be patient
(I used to tell corrective colour clients that the Sistine Chapel wasn't finished in a matter of hours)

Depending on how light you want to go the only way to get black hair to a lighter brown is to bleach it out and then tone it to the shade you want. I would not try to do this on my own if I were you, your hair will pull shades of red/orange and you have to know how to counter that to get the shade of brown you want.

i am a beauty therapist/ hairdresser and i strongly recommend that you go to the salon it will be more expensive but truly worth the expense. If not you will probably have to go after you use a store bought kit cos having dark hair you WILL throw orange red tones if you don't get the bleaching right plus you do need to know how to counter act the bleach properly. So PLEASE listen and go to a hairdresser.
