When entering the U.S. (or re-entering the U.S.) from a foreign country, you must land at an airport designated as a Port of Entry by U.S. Customs. In addition, you must land at the Port of Entry airport nearest your point of entry (crossing the border) to the U.S and clear Customs. There are other requirements, as well, including notifying Customs of your pending arrival at least one hour prior to landing, you must land within 15 minutes of that time, etc., or face stiff fines and possible jail time. I recommend you check with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) regarding requirements for international flights and Customs requirements at www.aopa.org. Oh yes, another requirement, which went into effect only recently, is that you must have a passport to enter (or re-enter) the U.S. even from Mexico or Canada by air (including pilots and passengers on private aircraft), whereas this was never a requirement for U.S. citizens before.

You will need to stop at the airport which is the closest point of entry to the U.S. You can check http://www.airnav.com/ or http://www.legfind.com/SiteMap.aspx?SiteMap=Airports to search for airports that have customs. You may also want to hire an international flight planning company to help you with the flight plan like: baseops, World Fuel or Colt Fuel.

Good luck with the trip!

Contact the AOPA for information, There are airports that are designated points of entry but in some cases you may be able to make arrangements with customs at a different airfield.
