I think the best way to do this is with black and white photography. That way it would be different from the traditional pictures that are around the house. Any suggestions on if we should go to a studio or a place like olan Mills or something ?

Yes, do b&w but also do some colour...you will probably only display one, but they will do several different poses, and the others might want different poses. And find someone reputable. If you like Olan Mills, and their studio is big enough for your group, (and their price is good!) then do them. The other thing you can do is check out portfolios of the photgraphers in your area to see what they can do. Some people are very skilled with groups and some people have a great deal of difficulty with them. So do shop around.

Karen....I would not trust Olan Mills, Sears, JC Penney or any of the other "Studios" with something like this. I had a portrait done in sepia...(i like sepia :) ) of my girls and their children done by an independent photographer...he was a bit more expensive, but boy was he good! No traditional backgrounds, no "phony" looking props...it was gorgeous. He was well known for wedding photography...might be worth looking into...He did my daughters and their children in an outdoor setting, willow tree hanging down around them, wrought iron chairs with table, wine bottle, plate of fruits and kids barefoot on the ground playing jacks...its lovely!

Most studios take digital pictures and can change them after the picture has been taken. You should let them be creative in their own way. They are experienced in what they do.
