The trick when trapping any animal is to do your homework first, and thats to watch and find out what they like best, there activitys, there curiosity, and things unexpected.
Ounce you have that figured out then the traping begins

Marshmallows seem to work the best here. At the campground my family has been at since back in the 70's, they've always worked.
Havahart, a live trap maker, agrees. Link below.

Microwave a couple or three strips of bacon in paper towels, Then bait the trap with the whole mess, towels, grease and all.
Works like a CHARM!

Fried Chicken Bones work great. Save your bones and use them as bait.

Mick R has it right but remember if they get use to that and avoid the trap go back to the sardines in oil and alternate back and forth to keep them coming to the trap.
But check your local game laws to be safe, a trappers license may be needed and there may be seasons to observe.
Best of luck and play it safe.

There's not much that won't attract them try Mc Donald's I did it one day I had close to 15 coons around the house for days. At least in my area they also have a taste for peppermint as well as cayenne pepper. But so do the Mule deer.

Make some tuna salad and put the liquid you drain from the can of tuna back in the can and put it in your trap. Coons here in Virginia can't resist it. You get lunch and catch coons. Thank God for the way it all works...

I have used cans of cat food, usually ones with fish as the main ingredient really lures them into traps.
