Generally YES it is best to file jointly. Buy a cheap tax program such as Trubo Tax or H&R's Tax program and do it both ways. Then you'll know for sure. Simply to ask the question as given does not contain enough information to answer your question at this point.

It is almost always better to file married filing joint than married filing separate. The child tax credit is a very valuable credit ($1,000 per child), which neither of you would get if you filed married filing separate. Any tax software or any tax professional should be able to tell you before you file your taxes how things would work either way.

almost always it is better to file as "married filing joint." It is rare that "married filing separate" is better.
