You can safely lose up to 5 lbs a week when you combine exercise and healthy eating. Dieting alone don't go beyond 2-3 pounds.
Beyond that you can disrupt your hormones as many are regulated in fat, stress you body, disrupt homeostatis, and the list goes on and on. In general you suffer a HIGH risk of yo-yoing and gaining the weight back for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is your body goes into starvation mode. At worse you could die.

Losing two to three pounds a week (especially if a person is grossly overweight) is not bad.
It's when people starve themselves and lose up to 25 pounds a month that it's bad. It means that the body is not getting the right amount of proteins, vitamins and minerals. There is not enough nutritional value and besides it being damaging to health, once a person starts eating normal again, the weight comes back and then some.

It is dangerous because loosing weight fast means that you are probably loosing mostly water (the only thing that comes out easily).
Secondly, you could also be loosing muscle, something you DON'T want, or bone density (Even worse).
Fat is lost at a rate of more or less 1 lb a week if you make a sensible diet. That is a good rate.

If you lose weight too quickly you are more likely to gain it back rather than to keep it off. Also, if you are losing weight too quickly, it is probably not by a healthy way.

Its a shock to your body, nothing helps it adjust like time, but it depends on how much weight your trying to lose. Like with surgeries and things ppl lose weight much more rapidly, and the are safe for the most part, the downfall though is saggy skin.

Probably nothing. It's the general advice given out to people because their specific health status is not known and for some people, weight loss can be physically traumatic to their bodies. That's why it is usually recommended asking your doctor before going on a weight loss regimen.

If you mean maybe 2.5 or 3 - then maybe your taking it too literally, but if you mean 5 or more, then you run the risk of organ and tissue damage throughout your body. The body is used to what it has - it needs to adjust properly, and utilize the energy it has stored up in fats. Eventually the body readjusts to understand your 'new' storage amounts. Also, you will lose vital vitamins and minerals if you flush out your system too fast. ---- Its your body, damage it all you want.

When you starve yourself your body retains fat.
People who lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measures usually gain back all (and often more) of the pounds they lost because they haven't permanently changed their habits.

When you lose weight, your body also produces a lot of byproducts from the metabolism of all the fat. Losing so much fat increases the buildup of harmful byproducts in your system.
