If you have an old bike it maybe a good learning tool if your interested in mechanics. If that's the case go to someplace like Bike Nasbar http://www.nashbar.com/subcategories.cfm?category=68 or Performance Bike http://performancebike.resultspage.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=books and purchase a book on bike repair, that will explain it better than anyone can on this forum because of all that has to be done. It could be pretty extensive depending on the condition of the bike.
All in all though doing a tune up on your bike isn't that difficult, it does however take th right tools, and a little time and patience.

You will need all the parts, tools, time and Know how to get the job done.

You could research your specific needs at this link.

An easier alternative is to wander down to your local bike shop and let them take care of it. If you find one of the (mostly friendly) mechanics on a quieter day they will let you watch and spin you a yarn at the same time. For this sort of entertainment people could pay a fortune. But it is usually quiet cheap.

You will pobably pick up a few valuable pointers and be assured that the job will be done right

Take it to a bike shop. They'll do everything for you and it's usually around $40.
