Their style of worship is more laid back because its not as ceremonial as other protestant churches or the roman catholic church. Although it is stereotypical to think that all southerners are southern baptists that's not the case. My family were mostly french huguenot and then later Anglican or Episcopal as most South Carolinians were. I don't know what you're comparing it to, but Baptists believe in immersion baptism instead of christening (sprinkling of water) and do not baptize infants. They believe you reach a point of accountablity (an age where you are held accountable for your sins, usually around 13) and then you need to be saved and baptized. Also, they don't have communion every Sunday, but rather once a month. Furthermore, they do not follow the calvinist doctrine of predestination (the idea that God has determined your life and choices for you ahead of time) like the Presbyterians do. Each southern baptist congregation is semi-independent. They choose their pastor by vote and he can stay as long as the congregation approves of him. Google the southern baptist convention and find out more from their website.

This is a bad analogy, and I hope that all of the Baptists will forgive me for it. The only difference is that Southern Baptists don't like cheese. I told you it was bad. God Bless you all!!!

You want to know about southern baptists, and want to know the difference. For there to be a difference, you must have 2 of more things to compare.

it took me years to figure them out. i attended a southern baptist church as a teenager.i was led to the lord, and i am thankful for that.it was in the seventies, and long hair was the fad then . long story short .i went to a revival at a different church, and the pastor changed his sermon to long haired hippies, and sin buggies(vans).he had to point me out so ,i stood up looked at him,and walked out the door.that one thing hardened my heart toward baptist. i stayed out of church until bout 3 years ago. anyway they are kinda laid back, and quiet, and to proper for me.some people like that. it's just not for me.

Historically and culturally they got swept into justifying Racism for the South in the Civil War. Struggling to straighten their 'aristocratic' attitude out.
