Give the dog a place to dig in the yard. Take him to that area and encourage him to dig there-praise him when he digs there. If he digs elsewhere-firmly tell him "no" and take him to the place that he can dig.

I have a 3 year old Boxer and even when her energy wear's out she still dig's holes. So this is what someone in our house has figured out what to do. This may seem gross but it works. They Got a shovel and got some of the dog poop and moved it to the dog hole and the dog would no longer dig in that dog hole.

The Dog may dig another hole. But as soon as you notice the dog digging a hole put some more of the dog's poop in the dog's hole that they just digged. Eventually the dog will get the hint and stop. My dog hates this and your will probably bark at your for doing so but this is what worked for us.

And if it doesn't work for you then, it means that your dog needs to exercise and play and your partner needs to take your dog for a walk.

That depends on what type of dog he has. If it is a Dachshund or a terrier you may not be able to. Some breeds are bred to "go to ground." Meaning that they like to borrow and search for small animals. You can look up what his dog breed was bred to do, but often trying to train a well bred dog that is supposed to dig, not to do that is not easily achieved.

Some dogs do this because they are bored. All dogs will become destructive if they do not have something to do. Try catching him in the act and give a stern NO...then run off and play ball with him and use up some of that energy.

Your not going to like this but it works first time every time. I have done it. Let the dog dig a good sized hole. Fill it with water. Take the dog to the hole with the water and stuff his head it in for about 10 seconds. That's just enough time to panic the dog. The dog will never again dig a hole for you to drowned him in. Like I said it sounds cruel but it works like a champ. I have raised obedient and well trained dog for twenty years now.

Does your partner care about the holes in HIS yard, or is it just YOU? It is his dog and his yard.

if the dog has favorite spots that it likes to dig then put foil there and then put some dirt on top. dogs hate the feel of foil on their claws.

Every time it digs a hole, drop his poop in it and cover it up.
