I shouldn't care less but I find myself feeling sorry for some people

well there are many people in the world who need love and maybe you can give that ?
if that is what you mean
but dont feel sorry for people ... people dont need that
they need empathy ... which is feeling how they feel so you are better abled to help them

Actually, you should care. Feeling for some people is a good thing and is what drives people to help the next person out of a tough situation.

I think it is natural when you see others in some sort of pain to draw on your own experiences with pain and thus sympathize. From there we sometimes feel it right to act to help based on the concept of reciprocity. We would probably want someone to care or help us if we were in pain and we can't expect that if we ourselves are not willing to do the same. These sorts of emotional responses aide social cohesion and help us function in societies where mutualistic behavior is required.

Empathy is natural for humans and is necessary for us to live together in cities. You are right to care for them, you could be suffering like they are and would want some one to care and maybe even change something.
