Goodwill has some "interesting" furniture. Try there. Cannot beat the prices.

You have received some good suggestions for buying cheap furniture for a small place. But why in the world would you want ugly furniture? It's possible to find cheap furniture that is not "ugly." Best bet for an attractive apartment is to find cheap funiture that is as basic and classic in style and as neutral in color (solids) as possible. Then dress it up with accessories. Check out thrift stores, yard sales, and the other sources mentioned in the answers you've gotten.

Go for cheap, but stay away from ugly!!! It can be done!

Craigslist is the best place to start. Also since you'll be in a college town, put up a flyer on a campus bulletin board that says you're looking to buy furniture. Also check out yard sales in the area, as furniture is usually really cheap at those.

Try any local shelters!! We have one called the Lancaster Outreach Center and was created to help the less fortunate in our city. It is a great way to help others and sometimes you can really find some not so ugly items at a really cheap rate. I don't know where you live but I am sure most cities have something like this. You can also build your own pretty cheaply, if you are the building type.

I have tried Salvation Army but they charge way too much for used furniture here. If you have a Savers in your area that is the best place to go. Accepting furniture hand me downs is also a cheaper alternative. :)

Salvation Army, and other second hand dealers. Yard Sales, In the paper. Walmart is more spendy but not as much as a new furniture dealer.

Your local volunteer run thrift stores may be a bit cheaper than the Salvation Army or the Goodwill, but that varies. It all depends on who's pricing what.
