Not being too rough on the hair so you break it is the first rule.
Gently scrub the scalp with the finger tips and slowly move the shampoo down the hair. Make sure you rinse the scalp and the hair well. TAKE your time!
Use quality conditioner after shampooing including a leave in one that sprays. And slowly combing the hair to get out the snarls.
If you can let the hair air dry you have less chance of drying it out.
And for every inch your grow out, have 1/2 inch cut off to keep the split ends gone and the hair looking great. There is nothing worse than very long hair that has broken, scraggly ends.

you did not ask enough, whether your hair is thick, curvy, frizzy, and so on. but i can say i have long, straight hair and its kinda thick. i keep it shiny, smooth and flaw as possible by using the new herbal shampoo/conditioner. the healthy way to keep it healthy is don't comb it till its dried. or comb your hair before you wash it, the easier it is to comb when it dries. i can also say, as for all girls with long hair knows to start combing from bottom to up right? and another thing is cut it at least a inch every month to keep splint ends. the shampooing part, you just rub it in the scalps and rub it all the way down as good as you can and then the smell goes on all day. well thats my secret, lol. good luck :)

Yes you only need to wash it from the scalp to the shoulders. Unless you use styling products. My hair is normal to dry so I don't wash it as often maybe every two to three days, if you have oily hair then every day. But you must get it trimmed often!! Or you will end up with scraggy split ends. I know because my hair is down to my waist and dead straight and supper shiny!!!

Well really, the only place you need to shampoo your head is your scalp. I know it may sound weird, but I read it in a magazine. shampooing at your ends can make it very frizzy.
