Soak them in ice water, caramelize them or sautee them. You can also substitute Yellow onions with Sweet, Red, Spanish onions or Shallots, all of which are a lot milder in flavour.

Boil a quarter inch of water then throw the onion slices in for about three minutes (until they just start turning transparent). Drain and refrigerate, then use as called for!

Caramelizing onions in a pan will surely make your onions "weaker" and taste sweeter.

You should put these choped onions for some time (say 10-15 minutes) in water and add some salt in it.
Try this as soon as possible and you will know that who is correct.

Use red onions or shallots...yellow or white onions typically are too harsh for a pasta salad.

I think you soak them in iced water for a few hours for raw onions.
Sweating them off in oil or butter for 10 minutes makes them taste sweeter and milder for cooked onions.

chop it very thin, and don't use alot of it. If the recipe asks for 1/2 cup of chopped onion,
only use a tablespoon of very thinly sliced onion.

Slap it down to size....
Seriously, just use sweet onions. Much milder and better for salads.
