We are remodeling out kitchen and will be adding a granite backsplash. What do I need to do to extend out the outlet/switch boxes? Are the extension box insert you can buy or a special type of box that I need to replace the existing ones with? Any advice would be greatly appreicated - thanks.

Very simple fix, you need to get some Fire rings(a sleeve of sorts that fits around the device), you can get them at home depot or lowes and also longer screws to reach back to the box.

It looks ugly to put outlets and switches in the granite. You might think about raising the outlets and switches above the granite.

To do this get "Old Work" blue boxes, as many as you need. Above the current outlet box mark the cutout and cut a hole in the wall board, (Sheet Rick or Lath and Plaster. Remove the old outlet, splice the wires to extensions using wire nuts, and put the extension through the new box hold in the back.

Push the new box into the wall and tighten the wing nuts. You can then connect the outlet and apply the face plate.

The extensions will work well also if you have allready cyut the granite.

What you need to do is buy longer screws that hold the rec/switch to the boxes. Then you buy SMALL nuts, and stack them over the screws. Apply as many as needed to make the rec flush with the new wall.

Yiou will probably need to reposition the existing boxes. The granite backsplash should not add all that much extra thickness, so it would make sense to me to see if you can't detach the boxes from the existing wall and simply reposition them forward the inch or so you will need.

None of the above answers are correct. The National Electric Code calls for a box extender to be used in this instance and installed within 1/4" of being flush from the surface of the backsplash. The other ways described would probably work, or you could just do it the right way.

no, you just keep the ones that you have but buy longer screws for the sockets
