My daughter will have her driver's license soon. What make/model would be a dependable, safe first car? And it would have to be a pre-owned at this time.

Of course a pre owned. No one in their right mind gives a kid a new car and not a sports car either unless they want them mamed. I don't believe in it. A good 4 cylinder because you do not want her to be able to speed and wreck, my opinion. Then just think of what she will use it for, and gas mileage. I'd try the Ford focus, Chvy has a couple of small cute cars and I'd go american because of the costs of repoairs on foriegn cars and the parts too are expensive. Let her go with you and look at a few used ones, Always be willing to walk away...let her know that and to never get excited in front of the sales person...they will know you want it. do you have a trade? If not you will pay more of course. Whatever you look at write down all the options it has and look it up on the blue book value to see what it is really worth. Then you'll know if they are marking it up too much. Also, when you buy or before, get a car fax which shows that it hasn't been in an accident. Look ate cars that are from 3 to 4 yrs. old and don't have a lot of dirt or obvious abuse on them, look really close because they can clean them really well. Then take the miles into consideration. You may want warranty on it so it may need to be a couple of yrs old. Good luck. don't be in a hurry. shop around and look out of town too. Good luck. Be a hard barganer, walk away and let them call you back it's a buyers market. Walk away and look at another dealer and get the best deal possble. Also, check ins. on different cars. That matters. If they have a sport package it's more, if they have 2 or 4 dorrs it maters too.

The best answer would be to look for a car that was owned by some older people like Grandma & Grandpa type people they take care of everything they own. It sure is nice to see you are helping your daughter fine her first car. Hey girl you have some pretty cool parents, you should return the favor and do all the chores around the house until you are old enough to move out on your own JUST KIDDING.

Good luck

Toyota Echo,

Why: because its cheap, and it saves ALLLLLOOTTTT of gas money. If its going to be her first car, and you say "daughter", then accidents happen, not to jinx it. But with the toyota echo, since it saves so much gas money, when an accident does hapen, you would have more money left to fix the car. Also the toyota Echo is SIMPLE and not a car that you could speed because it is very SLOW.

For a teenage girls I recommend pre-owned
Honda civic, Toyota echo or Toyota corolla.
They'll last long time, very dependable, dual air-bags and low maintenance.

Stay away from used German autos, especially anything older than 3 years cause it'll cost you arm & a leg for maintenance. I know, I am a mechanic.

A Toyota is a good car, for a first car.

And, a car 10 years or older, is cheaper for insurance. Also, since she's female, your insurance will be less, and, if she has good grades, your insurance should be lower as well.

Also, if you have a theft deterant (alarm, or some other such thing), air bags, etc, then your insurance will be lower as well.

Vaultswagons (spelling?) are good / safe first cars. Try a Jetta or a Bug for a 16 year old because you know how they have to have something cute that won't embarrass them.

a american made truck is the toughest vehicle out there. Also I think a girl who drives a truck to school is pretty cool.
