Australia has good surfing up and down the coast, some of the most popular surf spots are Noosa in Queensland, Byron Bay in NSW and Torquay/Belle's Beach in Victoria. There are many, many more surf spots but these are some of the more popular spots. Belle's is a world class surf spot where the hold annual surf competitions (also mentioned "Point Break") At the end of the day though there are great surf spots all along the east coast, south of the reef. Of these spots, I'd say that Byron is the most social, while the best surfing is probably in the Torquay area.

In Victoria, it would have to be Bells Beach, but the water is cold so I would recommend Western Australia - the beaches around Perth are awesome for surfing.
