The best is not to use toothpaste, it abrades the surface of the appliance. Use dishwashing liquid with a toothbrush or just the tooth brush plain.

I also had problems with a white residue collecting on the aligners and my Orthodontist suggested that I purchase the tablets used for the overnight soaking of dentures and use this cleanser for cleaning my dental appliance. I let the tablet dissolve in a glass of water with my dental appliance in the water too. Once the tablet was dissolved, I brushed my appliance with my toothbrush using the denture cleansing solution for 5-10 minutes and then rinsed it. There will still be some white residue but the denture cleansing solution helped alot. My dentist told me not to use ordinary toothpaste. I hope this suggestion helps. Good luck.
