From my personal experience, age doesn't always matter. I would strongly suggest you have your vet get a semen sample from your dog. The procedure is an easy one.

The vet then looks at the semen under a microscope to see how active the sperm are, as well as the number of sperm.

I had my nine-year old Borzoi (Russian Wolffhound) tested, and my vet said the sperm count and activity was like an ant hill. He did not expect that AT all because nine is considered quite old in Borzoi.

Best of luck with your venture!

Honestly until he can't do it right anymore. Hopefully he will be healthy up to 12 years or so and by now he has no know defects of problems. Some dogs lose interest when they get much older...but most don't. Have the vet check the quality of his sperm if you are serious about bettering the breed. Give him a high five from me! :)
