A duvet is a down comforter that is filled with down feathers. Duvet is the French word for down feathers. A duvet cover is like a giant pillow case to put the duvet in. And yes, you can put your old comforter inside the duvet cover.

It's like a pillow case for a pillow only it goes over a comforter and buttons at the top. I have a down comforter and it slips into a duvet. You can change them when you change your color scheme.

I think it is like a comforter or bedspread that goes OVER your comforter or bedspread to protect it. Leave it to the French.
