I'm considering buying an early model VW beetle. I was wondering if they produced one with an automatic transmission at that time. And how much it would cost to get an auto transmission for one. Thanks.

The " OLD STYLE" Beetles DID have an automatic.......sorta. It was called a " Stick Shift" Automatic...you shifted but did NOT press a clutch pedal when you shifted...it was all done for you with a switch you engaged when you pressed on the shifter and vacuum and NO...no Fully Automatic was available for this car. Driving a clutch is NOT that hard....just takes a little practice and coordination. Hope I helped.

IF you are fast, the question a few before this one is some guy WITH an autostick VW (71).

Looks like the user name of b a.

Hey.. this is almost like Craigslist (grin)..

Personally I think the autosticks were not worth the cost. High maint. and not really the automatic you expected. But, to each his own.

if you are talking about the original beetle, yes they did have one with automatic transmission. i would caution against buying a 30 yr old car. first off, they are known for rusting out. additionally the rubber components are shot as may be the brake and fuel lines. also understand that in terms of crash ratings, the old vw beetle is a death trap. their handing was crappy and because they have air cooled engines, their heating sucks. if i havent talked u out of this yet, please have your mother read this to u! your life is worth more than the sentiment.

they had a "semi auto" but they kinda sucked , the beetle is the easiest car to learn how to drive standard on since it only takes a couple of hours to change the clutch on them
