I think this is stupid cuz wouldnt you need to burn the calories and fat eaten rather than bike ride then come home and eat??
My girlfriend continues to argue with me about this...She claims shes worries about getting sick after eating THEN a bike ride.
Thank you for this...Why would you get some fitness then eat? You would have burned off calories for nothing.

In high school I remember learning that eating before you work-out helps gain mass, while eating after a work-out helps you to loose more weight. A football player needed to gain weight for college and the scouts told him that. I guess when you eat then work-out your body stores the food you just ate, but when you work-out then eat your body burns the food right away.

It doesn't really matter unless it is a big feed or a long ride.

A big feed can make you feel sick.

Depending on what you eat first, your performance may be affected. Your digestive system will be competing for energy. If you have eaten easily digestible food (high glycemic index) you will perform better. (but not burn as much of your bodies fat)
Note. Any fat you eat must be digested BEFORE your body can use it.

If your on a long ride (over say two hours) it is important to have food in your system since your body can only convert fat to energy at a certain rate. A small hourly feed (high GI food) is well suited for this.

To summarise:
1 What you eat is digested and turned to energy.
2 If that energy is not used it is then stored as fat.
3 If there is not enough energy being supplied by digestion your body burns fat to make up the difference.
4 If there is no energy being supplied by digestion you will "bonk"

Step two uses calories. The body uses energy to store fat then convert it back to energy.

Hope this helps

It's not stupid, when cycling you should always eat before riding. Eat light, toast,or cereal, muffin a banana, something to get you started.
Then as your riding always take a Power bar or use a gel pack ( GU Energy gel) or something of that nature to sustain your energy level. Always carry plenty of fluids and keep yourself well hydrated.
Eating is one of the most important things you can do before and during riding. Don't worry about getting sick, you'll burn off what you eat during the ride.
With what I suggested eating you'll take on 4 to 500 calories and on a 15 to twenty mile bike ride you can burn 800 to 1000 calories depending on riding style.
Think of your body as a car engine, if your engine doesn't have gas it quits and so will your body.

I'm not a medic or anything, but I think it's better to eat an hour or more before starting your excercise. If you're riding for a short time and not doing a hard workout, it probably wouldn't matter to eat after the workout, but you do need some energy during excersice.

If you're riding short in the morning, what you ate during dinner is more important than what you have in the morning, I think.

I agree with you. Riding a bike on an empty stomach is likely to increase your appetite, so you will probably eat more. Thus, you will have less weight loss than if you eat before exercising.

Unless you pig out, I don't think you have to worry about getting sick while riding your bike after eating.

You're overanalyzing it. You're burning some calories and taking in some calories. At the end of the day, when the caloric balance sheet is tallied, it won't matter about the sequence.
