Then, the next customer walks up to pay and you have to step aside with a fistful of change, if your coins have not already ended up all over the floor!!!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves, and for all those who are saying "Wow, you're picky!" - I've worked in retail for many years.

When I cashiered, I would always give people their change first then their bills. It actually can end up saving time, for all those who don't realize. If you do it the other way, people stand in line putting all their money in the right spot, holding up the line. If you put the change in their hand, then bills, they can handle things better and not worry about spilling all their change all over the place in the process.

The funny thing is, the problem would be eliminated if cashiers learned to count back change. People would get their change first, and also wouldn't stand in line counting to make sure their change was correct. Learning to count change back to a customer can be confusing at first, but too many businesses and employees are too lazy to take the time to do it and make it easier for everyone all around.

I have dropped many coins when they do this. When I was a cashier, I always put the coins in the customer's hand BEFORE the bills. I have been thanked by a few for "handing back change the correct way". I have also hated it when the CUSTOMER handed me all the money in a wad or put the coins on top of the bills and handed it to me.

Oh, my Gosh! This is so funny..I also get annoyed by this! I wish they gave me the coins first and then the bills...coz then, like you said, I have to stay there for a while to put all my money back into my wallet...and if I'm in a hurry, I get even more annoyed! lol All cashiers should be trained how to give customers their change the correct way LOL ;) (But still, I guess most don't care)

Not since I learned to cup one hand under the bills and use a finger from the other hand to force the bills into the cup shaped palm, really fast, before the coins land.

YES! Why don't people realize it is more convenient to give the coins and then the bills? Why? It's not harder, it doesn't take an extra step!

Wow, you hit on a pet peeve I didn't even know I had..

tell you what Jane, how many cashiers do you have to put up with in one day? right, now work out how many snotty customers us cashiers have to put up with in one day and i think you'll stop worrying over where she puts your coins! (incidentally, i hand over the coins while counting out the change then hand over any notes with the receipt) i have customers that do not even look up to acknowledge i exist after i have greeted them, emptied their basket that they have dumped on the belt, packed their goods into bags for them, all this with a smile and trying to chat, AND THEN the thing i HATE! they put the money on the counter for me to scrape up. aaaargh!!!! i treat each customer as an individual but some of them are just plain RUDE!!!

Nope that doesn't bother me. There are alot of stores now that have a machine that gives you your coins so hopefully it won't happen much longer.

How would it be to have such simple problems to deal with?
I have lived a life of chaos and confusion for so long that i would probably be so bored if thats all i had to irritate me.

It would be nice if they could hand us the loose change first. Now that they don't have to count your change back, they usually don't do that.
