Yes you need rabies shot record... usually when you go they give you a tag and papers. If you don't know if your dog had shots you should go to the vet.
It is cheaper to get a 3year rabies shot than just one.
You don't pay much for the shot, it's the tag that costs a lot. (which is odd)
plus get other checkups, heartworm etc. the vet will tell you
If your dog bites someone and you don't have proof of rabies shot you may go to jail, be fined from the city, or be sued or your dog maybe put down.
take care of your pet, also get the micor chip

If you don't have any proof of vaccination for him, you may have to do the whole booster series for him (depending on your vet and the area you live in). As far as the proof of ownership, most vets don't ask for anything like that. My dog and cat were both given to me without papers, and I've never had any issues with treating them. If you come in and say you are bringing in a dog for someone else, then they need to know that treatment is okay, but if you don't say any different, they assume the animal is yours. Depending on the shots your dog is due for, it will vary. Typical shots at the clinic I work for, not including a rabies, runs about $70 a year. Rabies is either $12 or $15, depending on whether its a 1 or 3-year rabies shot. We are reasonably priced for our area, but more expensive than alot of other areas in our state (I'm in Michigan, and in one of the suburbs least affected by the auto industry shut downs in the metro Detroit area). Hope this helps.

If he hasn't had any shots yet,No you don't need to. The vet will ask for the age of the puppy. Most vets start the shots around 7to 8 weeks of age and repeat every 3 weeks until a series of 3 shots are given/// The cost varies with different vets but it is in the ball park of $27 to to $40 for each series. and it is absolutely necessary that you proceed with the shots.

Since he is older than a year he only needs 2 shots. Vets very rarely ask for proof of ownership. Shots where I live cost about 40 dollars total. Pecos, tx by the way. Way out west

He was given to you a few years ago and you've never taken him for shots? If you don't have any records, it doesn't matter. He'll need an annual booster, Rabies and Bordatella (nasal drops). He
will also need a fecal float to make sure he has no intestinal worms, blood work to make sure he does not have heartworms, and at least this months heartworm preventative!
With the office visit, physical, lab work, shots and heartworm prevention, you're looking at about $120.
csmutz220...Bordatella is for Kennel Cough!
