I'm worried about my husband. He's been sick for the last few days (we thinks its a cold, or bronchitis, but he hasn't been to the doctor) Anyways, he started taking Zithromax (a prescription of mine) yesterday. Today, we noticed he started getting these tiny red dots on his chest. They are smooth, and not itchy. They look like they are coming from under his skin, if you can picture it... Now they seem to be spreading all over his body. Though they are really tiny. There are some on his feet, legs, arms, chest. None on his face and neck, though. Does anyone have any idea what this may be. He cannot get to a doctor before Tuesday. At first I thought it may be a side effect of Zithromax, but I read the label, and it didnt list rash as a possible side effect. If anyone has any ideas, or this has happened to them, I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

The red dots are called petechiae and they are caused by blood leaking from capillaries in the skin. If you husband has had a fever along with this you need to get to an ER. Petechiae and fever are symptoms that should get immediate medical care. Toxic shock presents itself as a rash after having a fever of 102 F or more.
Otherwise, If you husband has not had a fever, the likely causes are less worrisome. Petechiae are commonly caused by strep throat, and sometimes caused by colds.
If the petechiae do not disappear in a few days, or if the bleeding gets worse, there is another condition called idiopathic thrombocytopenia (ITP) that sometimes develops following a cold or flu. With ITP, the immune system gets kicked into overdrive, and it starts attacking platelets in the blood. Its too soon to worry about this - i am mentioning it just in case things haven't cleared up within a week.

Sounds as if you might be having an allergic reaction to something. Most commonly this is to new products being used in the shower or on the skin, new foods, or medicines being taken. A lot of the times it takes a lot of care to determine what it was that the reaction was to if you can even make that determination. You can take Benadryl to help stop the itching, but you need to be careful with allergic reactions. If you feel like you are having difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the tongue or lips then you should seek medical attention right away. With severe allergic reactions you can actually stop breathing. However, minor allergic reactions are more common that the the more severe type. Of course there are so many causes of skin problems that this is just one possible cause, and with it being of sudden onset this is the most likely cause as opposed to something like Chicken Pox or Measles which don't just have a rapid onset and spread like that.

I am actually allergic to pennicilin and Zithromax. I had a really hard time convincing the dr. because they adamently told me that it is really hard to be allergic to the zinthromax. While I was taking it I had my skin turn slightly yellow and found out later that it was poisoning my liver. After a few days on it I started to get a rash tat started on lower stomach and spread over arms etc. It looked like tiny pin-prick red marks like someone stuck me all over with little needles. I didnt feel itchy or weird but I got worried seeing them. I went to the dr. and they told me that it was a reaction to the Zithromax and that after the 10 day time period that antibiotics stay in the system I should be fine. I think you dont have to worry but he shouldnt really be taking antibiotics without prescription. It can damage the liver and cause oter uncomfortable side effects. Also antibiotics have to be taken for the full 7 days or have adverse reactions on the body. he should just eat well, rest and wait until Tuesday.

You can have a hypersensitivity reaction to any drug, including azithromycin. Hypersensitivity includes rashes.
No way in hell anyone is going to be able to take a quick description of the lesions and give you anything resembling an accurate diagnosis of what is going on. He's got to go to a doctor. I'd discontinue the azithromycin in the meantime - and, for future reference, it is NEVER wise to begin a prescription antibiotic without being assessed and prescribed said drug by a doctor. Not all antibiotics (in pathogens) are created equally, and giving the wrong drug (or incomplete course of antibiotics) can make the infection worse.
If he has had recent exposure to ticks or wooded areas where ticks might be present, I'd ER this.

Ahhhhhhhhhh! An allergic reaction to a medication can include a rash, itchy or not, so you may want to take him off of your medication until you can consult with a physician. You have chosen one which has a long tissue life, so take him off now and don't expect to see an immediate improval, but instead watch for worsening symptoms and next time Dr. first, then meds, not vice versa. This site has information that should scare you straight:

Zithromax is in the erythromycin family. It sounds like your husband is having a mild allergic reaction. He needs to stop the antibiotic right away as Zithromax stays in the body up to five days after the last dose. They'll put him on a different antibiotic. Stop this one though right away.

It sounds like an allergic reaction just stop the zmax and take benadryl....how ever you can have viral rashes...has there been any fever? Rashes are normally ok. And remember if he does not take the whole 5days of z max its not gonna work to its full potential....

could be coming down with the measles or an allergic reaction. A trip to emergency should determine what is going on.
