My 8 mth old Lab gets away occosionally and runs around the neighborhood. Yesterday he got bumped by a car and thank God he is perfectly fine. I am concerned that sometime it will happen again and he will not be fine. We normally watch him when he is outside doing his duties; but sometimes he gets distracted by other dogs and runs off with them. Does anyone know of a way to make dogs afraid of the road or streetwise as I have heard it called? Thank you.

I have been getting some nasty answers to this question and I know what a leash is and yes we use one on a walk and we tie out dog out often on a tie. I am just saying that sometimes he just needs to run out and pee and come right back in. When he gets distracted he runs off. Sometimes it is very cold and in the middle of the night. Yesterday when he ran off my husband was home alone with our grandchildren and couldn't take the dog out on a "Leash" with the babies. I am looking for a creative answer or trick on how to make your dog streewise as the One answer seemed to understand. To the rest of you who answered with sarcasm, Kiss Off!

How about fencing your yard, or buying a leash. Most places have leash laws anyway.

If your dog does happen to get hit by a car, and there is damage to the car, alot of insurance companies will come after you to pay for the damages.

You may also want neuter your dog if that isn't done yet, and enroll in some obedience classes as well.

It's called a leash, you should try it some time. Like Jess said, there are leash laws for a reason and I would only feel sorry for the dog if he got hit. Also try some obedience classes to train the recall using motivational methods.

Edit: if he needs to pee really quick, you can do what I just did with my three.

Step one: call your dog to you in the house.
Step two: pick up leash
Step three: attach leash to dog
Step four: walk outside with dog once dog is sitting nice and calmly
Step five: let dog pee
Step six: walk back inside
Step seven: take leash off and go about your business

Estimated time: 45-60 seconds. I'm sorry to have distracted you from your very important life that much. It's not rocket science and it is only a matter of time before your dog gets hit by a car. I'll feel very sorry for the dog once it happens. A tie out is not a solution either and it can cause a frustrated and potentially dangerous dog (many dog attack fatalities are caused by a tied or chained dog).

I'm not sure about streetwise... but when my pup needs to go out for a "quickie" as we call them, it's an in and out procedure. I get a treat that she only gets when it's time for a quickie and let her sniff the treat at the door. She'll go out, do her business, and run back in to get the treat. She has gotten distracted once or twice, but if you do this consistently and not every time your dog has to go out, he'll look forward to coming back in to get the treat.

Lots of dog walking on sidewalks. Every time you come to an intersection you STOP and say "stay" Some people say "Sit" but I dont think that is necessary because they dont like to sit when its cold and wet. . Then when the coast is clear you say "Lets Go". NEVER EVER walk in the street except to cross it.
I dont even need a leaqsh for my dog anymore. If he sees a dog across the street he looks interested in I say "Stay" and he stops from crossing.

nope, you just have to be very careful that he doesn't run out anymore.
