You need to get something especially made for that purpose. Scratch pad, poles, posts, etc.
Scolding him doesn;t work, as you have learned. What you can do, once you get something besides the carpet, is use a spray bottle adjusted for long range squirts. Keep the bottle close and when he starts to scratch where you don't want him to, just give a couple of squirts and then you can scold him. Use the spray in tandem with your disdain and with a whole bunch or repetitions he will learn not to scratch on the carpet or the chair or the bed post etc.
With the spray bottle you can get him before he has a chance to run away from a correction. You can get him from clear across the room.
Good luck

Try softpaws nail covers. They are a bit difficult to put on, but once they are in place, your cat won't be able to pick anymore.
Also, give him a variety of other things to scratch that are the same texture. For instance since he likes the carpet, put some carpet around a post, if you have scraps. He will scratch there instead of your floor, and he'll already be familiar with it.

Get him a scratching post. At least your cat is scratching your carpet, mine has scratched a couple of places up pretty bad on the wall. Scratching is a cat's way of filing their nails. Good luck!

Get a scratching pole for your cat... or make a wooden box and cover it with carpet. Train you cat to use these items instead of your carpet or furniture.

Get cat clippers and save their claws trimmed. There are sprays that are meant to repel cats (generally citrus scented) Get a scratching positioned up you additionally can practice them to no longer try this. Get a twig bottle and squirt them whilst they scratch mutually as making a ssst sound (finally you in easy terms desire the sound) It takes time and countless repetitions, yet you could practice them.

My cats do that too...I have a spray bottle with water, and when they do that I spray them if they start scratching. They scratch to relieve stress and mark their territory, so if you have more than one cat, that is the reason behind the behavior. If it continues even after spraying them, try spraying some green apple spray (it is at most pet stores). When they lick their paws, they will taste it, and eventually stop scratching.

they are trying to make a soft place to sleep, A scratching pole might help but I doubt it, it is in their nature, get them declawed so they dont wreck anything then just let them do it
