Its a comfort thing. THey do this when nursing from their mothers...all cats do it and they seem to do it when they are happy, sleepy and enjoying some great scratching from you. See it as a way to let you know they are smiling. <{~.~}> happy cat!

your cat is needing. all cats do it. don't punish him if he doesn't rip anything, however, if he is ripping things, try and get him a soft bed and or scratching post so that he has something to sharpen his nails and need on.

cats do that to their moms when nursing, so it is sorta like that, they are making their place softer, or more comfy, like when we fluff our pillows to get comfortable.
