When you are asleep, the mind is still working as it should. Before you go into the REM portion of sleep, you "insert" that you will remain alert (a thought) as you drift off to sleep. It's like when you are dreaming that you are flying. If you release yourself, the dream takes you anywhere your dream wants. But when you "decide" to go over an area you want, the dream adjusts to your decisions. Until you realize that you are controlling the dream and you jerk awake. Control that and you control the outcome of your dream or attain and answer to a problem.
