15% of the total fare, but no less than $1. Tip up to 20% for extra service like helping with your luggage or making extra stops.

$1 minimum, 15% if paying cash. If paying by credit card, consider 20%, as the cab driver has to pay a 5-10% processing fee for accepting credit cards.
When I work the low income neighborhoods, I usually get nothing, while it runs 30-200% in the middle income neighborhoods. High income usually run less than 15%.
I have a video entertainment system with 3000 computer controlled videos, from music videos to programs like the Muppets for children. I also have relaxation videos for people who've had a hard day at work. I have a 15" video screen.
There's a driver in Austin, TX who has an even more elaborate system than what I have.
Most cab companies do not receive a percentage of the meter, so don't tell the driver to turn it off early and they will get a larger tip. For most drivers, 100% of what they take in, meter and tips, for 2-3 days, goes to cover their weekly contract fees. As an owner-operator, I pay $230 a week, but I pay all my own maintenance costs, plus comprehensive insurance on the car. Liability insurance is carried by the company. If I add a driver, it cost me $60 a week, extra.
Locally, lease drivers pay $450 a week. Other cities charge more. Here, a taxi medallion cost only $5000, which the company owns. In New York City, they run $265,000. Individuals can have their own taxi medallions in NYC, but generally, the only way to get one is for your father to own one and you hope he has a short life.

When the ride is over, you pay him and give him
a 15% tip of the cost.
If he put your life in danger, no tip just the cost and report him.
