The best way is to read a lot, and whenever you encounter a word you aren't familiar with, look it up in the dictionary. I was an avid reader growing up, and as a result, I have a pretty expansive vocabulary. Just knowing a lot of big words isn't enough; you need to be able to use them in a conversation or in a sentence. That's why reading helps you learn new words better than just reading the dictionary.

Read good literature. Read classics (they will have lots of good vocabulary). When you come across a word you don't know the meaning of, try to understand what it means from the whole sentence (and the sentences before and after it). Then, close the book, look up the word in the dictionary, think about it, use it in a sentence, write it down and try to use it in your conversation. Don't try to learn too many words at a time, maybe a new word a day - or a maximum of 2.

Go buy a thesaurus. These are really cool books which contain many alternatives to any word we find in a dictionary. If you find yourself using the same word over and over, look up that word in your thesaurus and you'll discover lots of other words with almost the same meaning which you can use instead.

One of the smartest people I ever met says he always reads the dictionary. You don't have to memorize it, just learn a new word each day and put it to use in your everyday life.

Memorizing the dictionary. I am just kidding. After you get the word write it down and write down 5 times. It works for me!

Read more. You're not going to be able to learn every word but if you read and you remeber how the word was used in a sentence the you should remember the meaning

Read more challenging books. Or get one of those SAT vocabulary books and work with it.

Always use them in a sentence when you are speaking, that way you will never forget them or what they mean.
