if it is a few inches high and is made of concrete or blacktop it is a curb, if it is road level it is a shoulder, if it is an arc there is a good chance it is a curve

The "thingy" on the edge of the road!! That thingy depends on where you are and what road you are on. If you are driving, let's say a highway, the edge of the road is called the "shoulder". A curb is more for drainage and has a raised edge to it to force the water to run in a certain place. A "curve" is a slight turn in the road, like when the road you are driving on turns slightly one way or the other. Some curves can be drastic. Like a sharp curve. On many roads, a sign designated by curvy lines will be visible. I think the answer to your question is "curb"!!
