He is insulting, indicating your level of inteligence is lacking......I will omit the vulgar language. Can I refer my problem to Human Resource Mgmt?
Why do I have to be a sounding board for his anger and discontent. He is a security person, high level, and acts with impunity.???????????

Boy, sounds familiar! I left a good corporate job because of similar events and still have a boss with an explosive temper, which to me is SO unprofessional. In eighteen years of corporate life, I have NEVER seen Human Resources be anything but a management suck-up dept.. They will simply run back to your manager and repeat everything you've said. If you can keep cool and argue your points politely they may send the jerk boss to management training. Good luck. It isn't fair and it sucks.

Hi,
I am not sure what you have done so far about the situation, in case you have done nothing here is how you could start:

Out of respect to his position you should talk to him first eventhough it sounds like that may not be possible to reason with him but it lets him know that you know that there is something wrong. Tell him that that you will have to go to the HRM if his behavior consists and make sure he knows this is a fact and not a threat.

If he blew you off during your discussion or his behavior has not changed, make an appointment with HRM. If you have any proof of his behavior (e-mail, notes etc.) keep it and take it along.

If you give up and let it go, it may make you look as if you can not work well with your superior (for you next job, cause no one wants to hear my boss was nasty) and also does put the next person working for your boss through the same problem.

Make a change for the better in taking charge of this situation and have this boss of yours have to make a change too, it certainly would prolong his life with less stress.

Wishing you the best....

Yelling is one thing - but, vulgarity in any form either directed at you our even around you is grounds for an harassment suit. Harassment in the workplace is not just limited to sexual harassment, more over it is any action deemed to be harmful to your feeling of security at your job. Talk to human resources, if they won't do anything about it at all, then I would suggest beginning to search for another job. It just isn't something you have to tolerate. (also, I don't know the legality of it - as far as if you can use it against him - but carry a digital voice recorder in your pocket so you can capture some proof).

If he thinks that you are at risk then, seek out Human Resources and have it reported or on the other hand, you can simply say, "I was looking for a job when I got this one" and notify Human Resources and let them know that you are going to take some time off.

i used to have a boss like this. unfortunately we did not have a proper HR dept and i just had to find another job. my old boss was an alcoholic and he acted just like you described. if you really love your job and want to stay, tell HR dept or go above his head. otherwise i would go look elsewhere. just remember no matter where you work, there is always some kind of bull crap to deal with!
