how long does it take for it to come in usually- it says 8 weeks but does it take that long?

Normal Routine Service -
* Include your departure date on your application.
After you apply - You will receive your passport: Ordinarily, within 6 weeks. However, processing times can vary depending on workload and occasional unforeseen circumstances such as natural disasters. During busier times, such as the summer travel season, we encourage customers to expedite their applications if traveling in less than 8 weeks.

* Cost, in addition to regular application fees, is $60 per application plus overnight delivery costs.
* Two-way overnight delivery is strongly suggested.
* If you mail in - clearly mark Expedited on the envelope.
After you apply - You will receive your passport:Ordinarily, if you paid additionally for expedited service and two-way overnight delivery within about 2 weeks

It's a shame you don't live overseas. I am an American living in Tunisia and whenever we renew a passport for anyone in our family it only takes 10 days to 2 weeks and we don't pay any extra charges (although we just got our sons in one week!)

Issuance of an US passport can take up to 8 weeks with most being issued in 2-3 weeks except during high traffic periods like now. IF you are in a foreign country, your passport will be issued and ready in 2 weeks.

if its backlogged it will take a lot longer.
what I would do is apply for it a year in advance, just so you have it.
If you need it in less than six months I would expedite it. Who knows how backlogged they are.
