As I stated, Cooper is 12 and is very fat! He's a 2 family dog. Meaning that my neighbor feeds him treats all the time. During the day, he spends as much time at her house as mine. He is an active dog, playing fetch and chasing squirrels. He caught one this morning as a mater of fact! He didn't kill it, just caught tail fur. Anyway, Lately when he is laying on his favorite chair, he kind of whines, not loud or yelps, just a soft whine. He also shakes a little bit. I have felt his joints and he does not wince or pull away. He also does not seem at all bothered by it, I just want to be sure he is ok.

Fizzle, it's not that I think that Cooper is immune to overindulgence. Far from it! I just want to be sure that I'm doing the right thing for him.
Cooper still is interested in doing all his favorite things. ie playing tug of war with his stuffed toys. Chasing the squirrels, and walking in the evenings. I'm just trying not to be that over reactive "parent"

Have him checked out by a vet...they are the only ones trained to really figure out what is going on. It may not be his joints that are bothering him...it may be internal. Please, PLEASE, get him to a vet! I work in a vet clinic and I see overweight dogs all the time. Try to get him on a diet and talk to your neighbor about limiting or eliminating the extra treats. Just like person, an overweight dog is an unhealthy dog...it puts extra strain on the hearts and lungs and every joint and muscle he has. If you have a pet massage person in your area, bring him to her for a treatment. Mostly, just get his weight down...you will increase his lifespan tremendously, and probably elimate his pain.

If he's fat, you need to put him on a diet and have a serious talk with the neighbor. Overfeeding a dog or any other animal isn't "love", it's abusive and destructive. Get him healthy first, and if the problems continue then see a vet. People have the same problem. Why would you think a dog is immune to overindulgence and the problems it brings?

I hope your dog is ok! I have a fat labrador retriever who is 2 years old,and sometimes he makes quite whining noises when he is lying down.My dog is not in pain or sick,he will just make weird noises.I don't really think Cooper is in pain, but since I'm not a vet, please take him to a real vet.I hope it all works out!

treats make dogs gain a lot of weight and if the dog is over weight then im sure that would make him be in pain at that age. i would put him on a diet and make sure to take him on nice walks once a day and stop giving him so many treats. you can make treats that are not so fatning. also you can take him to the vet to make sure he doesnt have any joint probs. with an over weight dog they will be in a lot of pain if they have any joint probs.

Well he's old... and fat... so i guess he might be in pain, but if you can't figure out why then I really don't know what you should do, hun. I would suggest the vet? Or maybe just calling in and asking what they think? Maybe they have heard of something sort of similar and maybe you can take Fatso in. I hope he's okay! I love dogs!!!!!!!!!!!! =]

The bones are VERY brittle in a squirrel, and that is a problem in getting hung up ( like a splinter)......
