Correct. Going outside with wet hair, or when it's cold is folklore for catching a cold. Although these things don't actually cause colds because like you said it is a virus, temperature does play a role to some extent. The virus can survive in temperatures that are not extremely hot or freezing, so if it's just cold.......it's still alive. The reason we get more "colds" when it's cold......is because people tend to be in more closed spaces with other people...."to warm up." Having this closer interaction causes the virus to just multiply quicker because everyone is nearer to you. People still get colds in the summer......just not as often because we don't tend to confine ourselves in smaller enclosed places to warm up from the weather outside.....making the chance to come in contact with the virus stronger.

Yes, in order to get sick with the cold or flu, you have to be exposed to the virus or bacteria. Then if your immune system cannot fight it off, and it spreads, you get the symptoms. I think where the whole "you'll catch cold if you go outside with out shoes" thing came from is: If you are cold, wet, or haven't been eating right, then your immune system is not as strong and it is easier for a virus to take over. We are constantly surrounded by viruses and bacteria on a daily basis, normally our immune system is able to handle them.

The potentially larger factor regarding why people get sick when it is cold out has to do with more people staying indoors when it gets cold (winter), facilitating closer person-to-person contact and greater spread of infection.
And, as the others have said, the illness itself is caused by pathogens such as viruses and bacteria.

right... but that whole story about going outside and catching a cold... I think what they have determined is that your immune system might be weakened, making you more prone to catching a virus.
