Do you celebrate it? What do you do? How does it fit in with your religion? Or do you, like me, see it as just a great excuse to party, no matter what religion (or lack of it) you are?

What do you think of Mardi Gras? Wonderful event!

Do you celebrate it? - no.

How does it fit in with your religion? - It's the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. Reminder to prepare to fast and get serious before Lent, and Easter.

I do not party, but I am so glad people do/can. The Mardi Gras has expanded from New Orleans to many other cities, which is very nice to see.

I think Mardi Gras is a waste of time. It causes all sorts of problems - trashing of the streets, public drunkenness, fights, shootings, crime of all sorts. The police department dreads when it is coming around.

Don't celebrate it so I don't do anything different than I normally would be doing. Has nothing to do with any of the beliefs that I have.

As to your view of it - not the same as mine. But since you seem to support it - don't toss all your mess on the ground around you, get drunk and into fights with too many being shot. Don't go out among the people there to pick their pockets or rob anyone. If all would approach it that way - wouldn't have a problem with it.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is different in the tourist areas than it is in regular neighborhoods. One is all boobs, beads, grenades (a kind of drink) and fun and the other is about beads, children and fun.

I wish I could be down there. I went on spring break in college and had so much fun (though it was a week after the big event happened... but, still... lol).

I'm a Southern Baptist and I love the Mardi Gras. I lived in New Orleans for many years and enjoyed every minute of it, it was such a wonderful time. Everyone smiling and laughing, vying for beads and doubloons, dancing in the street, good food and good times.

Is it a pagan holiday or something? Probably, but that's not what we celebrated in New Orleans ... in my little corner of it we were celebrating life, even when death was all around us. That was one of the wonderful things I loved about New Orleans was their approach to death ... they had a parade down the street in honor of your life when you died! They taught me that even in the bad times you should dance and sing and enjoy the life that you still have and those around you.

Freakin awesome excuse to party. Any holiday called 'Fat Tuesday' has to by nature be fun. Also, whether you're religious or not, it serves the purpose of allowing people to blow off steam by violating the usual social norms and do things they normally wouldn't (like flash everyone with their body-painted t*ts), which is healthy for society overall because then our frustrations and tensions don't build up.
Yay holidays :D

We Anglicans call it Shrove Tuesday. In order to get all sugar out to the house, they used to eat a lot of pancakes in order to use up the syrup just before Lent began on Ash Wednesday. We still do this just for the hell of it.

I think it is a good event, though I have never celebrated one or gone to one in the City, as I am not fond of particularly large crowds.

I see it as a chance to party. I have never been to the actual celebration, though.
