In my opinion you can have names at the ready, but when you meet your new pup his/her personality will help you a great deal. There is no hurry to name him/her, take a couple of days with the pup and a name will come to you. Then you scratch off names that you know don't fit. This is what we did with our boy Ruger Chomps, he's like a gun that bites - always ****** and ready and if your not paying attention he'll get ya. Oh, and don't worry he is in no way vicious, just a rambunctious pup. He's an American Bulldog by the way, 4 months and 50 pounds. Look into the breed, you'll be pleasantly surprised! And I am not telling you to look into this breed to turn a buck, we breed and raise them to preserve and better the breed. Good luck to you!!!

Wait until you get the dog and get to know him. It's okay if he doesn't have a name for the first few days. If you pick a name before you meet him, you may find it doesn't fit him at all. I've done this with all of my pets except for those that already had names when we got them. Over a few days we always find that we are starting to call it certain things, and one of those things or a version of it is usually a good fit.

Over the years our pet names have run the gamut from weird to ordinary:

Spaghetti Joe Murphy (Called Joe)
Yoda
Nala
Bravo
Boyfriend Joe Murphy the Puppy Cat
Moses
China
Chewki
Kioki
Esprit
Fang
Scooby
Angel
Shake

I could go on!

I think a great name for a boy dog is Jasper or dodger. And a good name for a girl is Preacious or Shanook. Or you can look up dog names by going onto google and typing in "Good names for dogs." Well, I hope I helped you out Peace!

Congradulations on your getting a new "best friend." Remember that this is a life long companion, not just a "pet" that will adore you and will need lots of love and attention. In return, you are about to have the experience of a lifetime....the love of a fur kid!

Names: Copper .... sounds adorable and our Sheltie loves his name. He also goes by Copper Penny...and will run towards us every time we just whisper his name. Must be something in the sound. LOL

There are lots of cute names...think of something that makes you really happy and you will be on your way to success with your new friend.

Other suggestions:

Males: Shadow
Copper
Scamp
Skippy (like the peanut butter)
Panda
Muffler

Females:
Mittens
Cozmo
Allie
Gator
Shamrock
Sherrie
Champange

Hope this helps & wishing you tons of joy and many blessings. Patti

Pick anything. Use a baby name book and give him a human name. Or pick something else. My dog is named Inu Yasha based on Rumiko Takahashi's manga and anime. My dog was born on the same day that the very first manga volume of Inu Yasha was released in Japan.

The most popular dog name in North America is Sam, Sammie or Samantha (which means "listener"). The second most popular is Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (which means "the greatest" in Latin). Third is Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha, Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta. Other very popular names are Brandy, Ginger and Taffy.

I've had:
Doodle (short for SnickerDoodle); Austin; Randy; Annie; Cyndi; Sassy; Dawn

Sometimes I like a name before I ever get the dog (like Cyndi or Dawn). Annie was named for (Little Orphan Annie, because she was a stray). I named Randy after the street where I found him (Randolph Blvd.)

Hope this helps some. Good luck.

My husband and I had a hard time trying to come up with the 'right' name for our second dog (Hewie). He's totally gorgeous & his name suits him to a T! My husband got to name Hewie because I named our first dog (Leeroy - after the guy out of the Prodigy!!). All my husband did was to come up with a letter he was interested in the name starting with & then we looked at name sites on the net - very interesting! Another way around this issue is to look at your heritage - for example my husband has Dutch heritage so we looked at Dutch names! It's hard to know what to name your dog if you don't know what he or she looks like and it becomes easier as you get to know their character too!
