In the military you are ordered to report to a specific place at a specific time.You can't show up when you feel like it.If you do not report on time you are considered absent without leave. Meaning you were not excused beforehand so you really better have a good reason for being a no show. In the past ,in time of war you could expect a military trial and quite possiby be found to be a deserter and shot. You could also miss your bus coming back from a weekend pass and be declared awol which could have you peeling spuds for a month.

It is used both for "Absent With Out Leave" and "Absence Without Official Leave"

Absent without leave for the Army and Air Force, UA, unauthorized absence for the Navy and Marine Corps.....same charge, just different names
