You would have to go in and do a tasting so you know what you want and cakes that are shipped are expensive since Silvia Weinstock who's a celebrity wedding cake baker charges a pretty penny to have cakes sent. It's easier to just go to a local bakery and do a tasting since you want your cake to be delivered that day so it's fresh and ready to eat.

Bakers are usually going to want to meet with the couple, or at least have some sort of picture of what they want ... going to a tasting is a great idea also because a great looking cake doesn't necessarily mean a great tasting cake.

If you're planning a destination wedding to San Diego, then ask for references for local bakers from your venue ... chances are they'll know who is who when it comes to things like your cake.

You do NOT want to order one over the internet!!! You need to visit one of many local bakers and try samples. If you order from some place you have never visited or had samples from the cake could be gross! Also the baker may not be reliable from the internet. Also I dont even know of any quality baker that lets people order online. They let you look at their designs but you have to actually go to the shop and taste the cakes.

make and ship small wedding cakes all over. And they're great.
Not a lot of bakers will ship wedding cakes; some will ship small cakes, though.
