While an M-1 carbine is legal in California, regulations vary from county to county and city to city. Carrying it loaded in a vehicle is absolutely forbidden anywhere in the state and will earn the violator a stiff prison sentence. He'd best check with the police in the community into which he's planning to move BEFORE bringing the weapon - better safe than sorry.

im sorry to burst your bubble but full autos are not illegal. Alot of people have that misconconception. The ban of 86 in which you might be refering to only stopped full autos from being manufactured and sold as new to the public. You can still buy the grandfathered ones( what we call pre-ban 86) at a hefty price tag some exeding ten thousand dollars. You must have a federal tax stamp, a class three weapons license, and the permission of the sheriff in writing for you to legaly own one or more full autos ion almost all juristictions. Also calf, I believe has a law that does not allow more then 5 or 10 round mags I believe so he needs to che ck with the Calif. Department of Law enforcement.

Yes, it's legal.

However, last time I knew, certain rifles were declared as "assault weapons" and need to be registered with the California Department of Justice. Check with them.

For answerer "dlgfdg" - fully automatic weapons are indeed legal in California and many other states. It's hard to get permission...but, that doesn't negate the fact that they are indeed legal to own after that permission is received.

The M1 Carbine is legal so long as it is not able to be used as a full automatic. All fully automatic weapons have been declared off limits.
