sadiehawkins is comming up...and i really need a dress. but she won't let me wear anything halter, sleeveless, or noodlestraps. she wants sleeves or nothing, and it's just like impossible to compromise. it's so freakin annoying. she says that we don't need to "attract" boys. that we're just here to please god. and that's like the STUPIDEST thing i've ever heard. i mean..hey. pleasing god is good. but i DO want guys to be like "hey. she's NOT some loser who dresses for funerals." so is there ANY way to persuade her? i'm not going to pick out some cleaveage showing hooker dress that goes down to your bellybutton. i'm not like that. i just want a bubbly dress that fits MY personality..not hers.
so any advice?

First of all, check out the dress I found in my sources: It has sleeves and I love it. While I don't really know your style, I thought I'd at least try to show you that sleeves aren't necessarily ugly. And don't worry so much about what boys think. Everyone wants to look pretty, but think of it this way: everyone else at that dance is going to be wearing some dress/halter with no sleeves. Guys aren't even going to notice that anymore, try instead to look different and turn a few heads. I know my friend made her dress out of those free aol cds, and she won "best dressed".

I think that it is true that you need to be able to express yourself. I also feel that your mom has a point. Even if you don't bring God into the equation, you should realize that you don't need to have your shoulders showing to attract guys. If they are just all into that then they aren't looking at you for who you are. I can't tell you what you need to do, but maybe you are being impossible and uncaring to someone that probably cares for you more than anyone else. Does she really deserve that. Maybe try wearing some kind of a shawl or jacket over the straps. Show her how you look that way. She might just change her mind.

Girl, I'm sorry but sounds like your mom is set in her ways! Can you find a dress with sleeves that's still cute? Give it a try. There are tons of cute dresses that have sleeves. Just try to keep the woman happy, especially if she's payin for it. Remember, when you're older and move out, you can do what you want!

go with your Mom to the department store, and offer to try on five dresses that she picks and five that you pick.... tell her that you realize that dresses look entirely different on the hanger than they do once on, and you are hoping that she will be at least open minded enough to let you try a few on that she wouldn't ordinarily pick. Then both of you can see firsthand if they look appropriate or too flashy, too much skin. You might even like one she picks out.....like the other answerer said, there are some really feminine dresses that have sleeves....especially in the junior section, you just have to take your time and really search through the racks.

Sleeves can be sexy, maybe you can find some sheer ones or something. You could even go in an asian style dress, or a kimono, or a sari to be different and "bubbly". If none of those options fit your taste, remember that it could be worse. Your mom could refuse to let you go because you're not going to wear what she wants you to. Be thankful that she's letting you go at all, and keep that in mind

Try to take it into your heart that your mom wants what she believes is best for you and while you're young she is responsible for you. You are your own person but you also are a reflection of her. You'll be a happier person if you try to agree with her for now and then when you're an adult you can decide everything for yourself. If you give her this one, maybe you could remind her of it in the future when you really want something else that is more important. Good luck!

just try to do something and help her around the house and do some choreas and maybe she'll realize that u r responsible and she will get u an awesome dress!

why dont you take a freind shopping with you or better still a frined with her mom? that way you'll have more chance of getting things right for everyone, think about it
