I've always wondered why they say this. If it's so important, wouldn't they put it at the end of the NASCAR season? Note: I'm not a racing fan, I don't watch it, and don't understand the points or anything else associated with it. I've just heard this phrase alot.

Well to tell you the truth it has always been the first race of the year. And thanks to the marketing and all the money that goes into this, the winner get's paid 1.5 million. that is why they say that about daytona 500. Plus this race course has alot great nascar history including the death of Dale Earnhardt 6 years ago, and alot of drivers have one every other race but this one

Well this is just one important race the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 400 aka the Brickyard are probably the two biggest races of the year so they are both considered the Superbowl of Racing and they are huge races and they're more important and they have the most money and the most fans and the biggest and coolest stuff and they spend weeks and months preparing for everything and wanting to be the best we can and they also have alot of major events like the Shootout and the Duels.

I dont agree with that phrase I think this is a matter of opinion my preference is the much smaller tracks like dover yes I live here so its a hometwon thing I guess but I love bristol and martinsville too I think a race where they have to restrict how fast they go mechanically isnt exactly a star race. Although I have to say this years daytona 500 was one of the better ones

Because there is a crap load of people who go and it's getting everyone all hyped up, and to that guy who said NASCAR isn't real racing, that's what all those F1 people thought and that Montoya guy sucked.
