I was an air stewardess for 8 years...
It is so that in the event of a crash landing/emergency landing you as a passenger would not be night blind... Try being in a room with the lights on then turning them off and finding your way around... for a few seconds you are 'night blind' ... this is the adjustment period where your eyes are getting used to the light being dimmer....
the alternative of this is if you are in a darkened room and someone puts the light on ... your eyes are 'blinded by the light'
In an emergency situation the cabin crew dont want passengers grappling around ... being unable to see.. seconds are vital.

From a previous best answer on this:- "Aircraft dim lights during landing and takeoff because it is a sage of flight when the aircraft is most prone to accidents and crashes. Dimming the cabin will adjust passenger's eyes to the amount of light outside, so it won't take time for the passenger's eyes to adjust in the event of an emergency."

It's done so that the passengers' eyes get used to the dark so that in case of emergency their eyes will be ready for the darkness. Cause as you know when you are in a room with the lights turned on and after a few moments you turn it off, you become blind for a few seconds and vice-versa. If there is a crash and the passengers are temporary blind, there will be more injured people or even worse death. Cause during a crash every second is important and you can't wait for your eyes to normalise.
Hope this helps.

During takeoff any instrument failure would have the gravest consequence for the flight, i.e. all battery power needed, and in addition, the fasten your seat belt sign is most visibe when all the lights are off.

The reason why the lights blink or go off an on right after landing when the airliner stops at the gate is the transfer of power between the planes internal electrical power and the power supplied to the plane by the gate.

So you can see that this question has been asked about 50 times before!!!!!!
Real reason: to get ur eyes used to the emergency exit lights should the aircraft have to be evacuated

This lets the eyes get used to dark, so in case of an emergency the passengers can see better.
And i'ts most sensed at night.

Good question!
I always thought it was that the aircraft was using a LOT of power, like when I start my car the lights dim.
I wish I had a more definate answer for you.

This give people who hooked-up on the plane one final change for a deep, wet make-out opportunity with a lot of squeezing and privacy !

I thought it was so the passengers could get a better view of the city lights as they land.
